I walked the woods with a Chinese businessman years ago in Northern Wisconsin in search of medicinal plants and mushrooms. It was one of the most educational experiences that changed my way of thinking. long story short, we discovered a patch of wild ginseng, a plant I am familiar with and don't harvest for many conservation reasons. He went on about the difference in value from cultivated to actual wild ginseng, wild being about 10x more valuable. To help me understand, he cut me a root to chew on to compare. My heart rate increased and I became alert and any brain fog I had was gone in less than a minute. That was the first time I tried true wild ginseng. He told me "Cultivated ginseng does not do that. Farmers see ginseng as a cash crop not a medicine. That's why you never see good ginseng''.
I wanted to share this root as a tea but the cost is high and the supply is low. I looked back into cultivated farms that follow good and safe farming practices and sampled their ginseng, tastes like ginseng, smells like ginseng, no stimulate effect, and no change in mental clarity like the wild stuff.
A few years later, I found a farm that had some 5 year root that was organic. I tried that root and it certainly had that stimulating effect and potency I was looking for. I took a few samples back to the shop and ran it through a standard pesticide test kit. Unfortunately, this good quality ginseng was off the charts with pesticides, specifically fungicides and some insecticides. I decided not to sell any ginseng products and haven't said anything good about the industry since.
I have been planting wild ginseng in my woods for almost 20 years. I found they don't grow well without pesticides. When planted and grown naturally, it takes many pounds of seed to yield a few plants. Ginseng is a wild plant that has limited defense mechanisms against fungus and insects, not to mention deer. It's best defense mechanism may be not coming up every year. Sometimes it can be dormant for years and then one year its back up where it left off. This could be the reason it hasn't been harvested to extinction.
I recently found a ginseng farmer that is successful at growing ginseng the natural way, in the forest. Because he has the proper soil and shade conditions for ginseng, the pests are manageable without the high use of pesticides and care. Good ginseng is hard to find and after many years searching, here it is.
This ginseng tea is older root ''7 years'', and has the medicinal quality, stimulating effect and flavor without the pesticides. After curing and drying, I was able to make a something with these roots. This may be the best ginseng product you can buy in a store throughout the Midwest.
