Raspberry leaves are high in Vitamins B, C, and E, iron, as well as manganese and magnesium. The high content of magnesium can help relieve symptoms of menstrual cramping. The leaves are also high in antioxidants due to polyphenols such as tannins and flavonoids. The tea can also help ease bloating with its diuretic effects.
There is an intricate process involved in properly harvesting and drying herbs. At the market, people often ask how did you get it so green? And the answer has two parts.
-
- First, we only harvest the primocanes (first-year growth). This is where they put the majority of their nutrients. We can get twice as much leaf by harvesting second-year canes but most of the nutrients are put into the flowers and berries instead of the leaf. First-year growth is what we want for high-quality tea.
- The second part is the drying process. No heat is used whatsoever, so the first time any bioactive compounds are released is when you steep it. If it's retained its green color it's safe to assume it's retained the bioactive compounds as well. And that's hard to beat.
Raspberry leaf tea and pregnancy: Raspberry leaf has been used as a uterine tonic and general pregnancy tea for many centuries. Although this botanical is often mistakenly recommended to induce labor, its actual role is to increase blood flow to the uterus and aid the uterine muscle fibers in more organized contraction. Therefore, it is not recommended to drink this tea in the first trimester but to start after 32 weeks.
